Make your own espresso drinks at home

December 8th, 2010 at 07:38 pm

There are many articles about saving money by making your own coffee at home. But they're about making drip coffee. What if you prefer the more sophisticated, cafe espresso drinks, which require more skill to make? Isn't that why you spend the extra $3 - $4 a day to buy it from Starbucks?

How much does your daily latte or mocha cost you? $3 - $4 a day? $21 - $28 a week? $84 - $112 a month? What if you made your espresso drinks at home or even at work?

You don't even need an expensive espresso machine! In fact, I'll admit, I'm afraid of the espresso machine, especially the frothing feature. It's loud and screaming hot. You can burn yourself if you're not careful. And it takes a lot of skill to use it.

I have both types. The one you show above and the electric one with the frother. I just add the water just below the steam button. I add the coffee in the basket and then pat it down with a plastic bottom of a cup. I normally just scald my milk on the stove. I let it come to a boil and when it rises, take it off the stove and then return it again to allow it to rise one more time. But if you want the frothiness, you will have to use the machine. It's not difficult; it just looks like it is. Love those expresso's.

Thanks for the comment, Aleta. I usually do the same, heat the milk in a pan until it rises. So you have the electric moka pot?

I don't know if it is a moka pot. My expresso machine is made by Mr. Coffee. Right now my my carafe is broken. But, I use both. Love the coffee. I also make a fantastic coffee called the Nutty Irishman. I add 1 oz of Frangelo liquer, 1 oz of Bailey's Cream, the rest in coffee. I add whipped cream on top and shaved semi-chocolate and nutmeg on top of the whipped cream. It is one delicious coffee.
